Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek Overview

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is a less well-known and challenging trek that spans approximately 220-230 kilometers (depending upon the itinerary). This trek leads the trail to both North and South Base Camps of Mount Kanchenjunga. It offers you the perfect opportunity to witness one of the Himalayas’ tallest mountains. The route explores the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, widely known for its biodiversity, including endangered species.
This trek is not crowded like Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit and remains relatively untouched. Therefore, this trek brings wilderness experience and trekkers can witness raw Himalayan beauty, traditional life and varied terrain, from lush valleys to high altitude moraines.  The trek starts with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Biratnagar, followed by a drive to Basantpur.

The journey begins with small ascents through terraced fields, subtropical forests and remote Limbu and Rai villages such as Amjilosa. As you ascend, you will encounter Buddhist monasteries and fluttering prayer flags. This route to North Base Camp (Pangpema) offers panoramic views of Kanchenjunga and other peaks like Yalung Kang and Kumbhakarna. On reaching Pangpema, the trek crosses several high passes before descending towards South Base Camp.

For trek difficulty, the Kanchenjunga base camp trek is considered challenging mostly due to the distance involved and the altitude. You are supposed to be in the best of health and ideally to have been on some high-altitude treks before. The itinerary is well planned with adequate days for acclimatization to prevent acute mountain sickness. There are teahouses along the path, but these are far from what you would find in the more mainstream trekking areas. Therefore, this adventure is best suited for those who want to go all the way into this raw experience.

There are a variety of Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek packages available. These packages are fully customizable and can be customized as per the need of the traveler. Shorter and longer itinerary are also available depending upon the preference of traveler.
