It is climbed more than 500 times after it was first conquered by Herbert Tichi, an Austrian citizen in 19th October, 1954. Cho Oyu means in Tibetan language “The Turquoise God”. According to the folktale of Khumbu people, Cho Oyu fell in love with the Goddess Chomolungma (Tibetan name of Mt. Everest). But Chomolungma got married with Mt. Makalu. Being sad by the act of Chomalungma, Cho Oyu never married and thus it faces opposite of the Chomolungma i.e. Cho Oyu is opposite of the Mt. Everest.
