Everest Trekking

The Everest region of Nepal is the home to world’s highest peak, Mount Everest (8848 m), which is a legendary destination for trekkers around the world. Often regarded as the Khumbu Region, it gives more than just the thrill and adventure of seeing Everest up from close. Trekking in this region is a journey through a rough landscape of tall peaks, ancient monasteries, Sherpa Villages and pure cultural heritage.

Situated in the northeastern Nepal, the Everest Region is within the territory of Sagarmatha National Park (listed in UNESCO World Heritage Site). This region is rich in biodiversity, home to rare species like the snow leopard, red panda, musk deer and Himalayan monal. In this region, most of the treks start with a thrilling flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, a small mountain airstrip often referred to as one of the most dramatic airports in the world. The region’s highlight is Everest Base Camp (EBC), beside this there are many other trekking routes that offer equally rewarding experiences. From serene alpine to high altitude passes, the region is ideal for both classic and off-the-beaten-path adventures.

The Everest Region is comprised of several beautiful treks which can be completed by both experienced as well as first time trekkers. Such treks include Everest Base Camp Trek (EBC 14 Days), Gokyo Valley Trek, Three Passes Trek, Everest View Trek, Ama Dablam Trek and many more. These treks can be done one at a time or can be combined with one or more such as Gokyo Valley Trek can be combined with EBC via the Cho La Pass Trek. The Khumbu Region is not only the home to the world’s tallest mountain but also the home to other towering peaks such as Ama Dablam, Choyu, Lhotse, Mera Peak, Island Peak and many other.

The beauty of the Everest Region lies not only in the towering peaks but also in the culture. Going through the Khumbu Region means encountering the prayer wheels, mani stones and fluttering prayer flags at each turn. The Sherpas are widely known for their mountaineering prowess and deep-rooted Buddhist traditions, add a layer of authenticity and warmth to the experience.

The natural ambience of the Khumbu Region adds an extra bit of beauty. Walking through the beautiful rhododendron forests, cascading waterfalls and alpine meadows gives a truly enchanting experience. The Panoramic Viewpoints from Kala Patthar, Gokyo Ri and Renjo La make sure you are left stunned and awed by the beauty of this region.

The best time to plan the visit to this Region is during the spring season (March to May) when the sky is clearing and the forests are full of rhododendrons. Autumn season (September to November) also offers the best views, dry trails and lets trekkers experience the Nepalese festivals like Mani Rimbu at Tengboche. Winter is possible but extremely cold and challenging, which are less preferred by the trekkers. The trails in this region are filled with small yet beautiful teahouses which offer basic but comfortable lodging and meals. Most teahouses provide local dishes like dal bhat, Tibetan bread, and Sherpa stew (Shyakpa).

The Everest Region is a dream destination that takes you through the adventures of all levels. If you are planning for the iconic 14-day Everest Base Camp trek, exploring the tranquil Gokyo Lakes, each trail gives you a different facet of the Himalayas. With proper planning, and well thought itinerary and an open heart, trekking in the Everest Region will be a unforgettable experience. From towering and snowcapped giants to spiritual encounters, every step taken in the shadow of Everest is a step into the extra ordinary.
